In July, Adopt-a-School and Lafarge Education Trust hosted an awards ceremony across the 39 adopted schools in the Mzimela Disctrict in KZN and the Bodibe Village in North West to celebrate hard work and give recognition to learners and educators who have shown commitment and excellence in their work. The awards ceremony recognizes those who have applied themselves to their studies and those who have played an important role in uplifting their community.

The awards were attended by Adopt-a-School Foundation executives and board members, the Chairperson of Lafarge Education Trust, Cheryl Carolus, officials from Department of Basic Education, parents, learners, educators and other stakeholders in the school community.

Awards include best performing learners in mathematics, English, science and accounting, best overall performing learners, and most improved learners.

In Mzimela, 14 learners received academic performance awards. Ngqamzana Primary School received the Sports Award and the Innovation Award.

In Bodibe, 24 learners received awards for their achievements. Naletsane Primary School received awards for the best school leadership; Mmuagabo Primary School received the Enterprise and Community Award and Matlabe Primary School received the Sports Award for improving their sports endeavours and initiatives.

Eleven learners received the Shanduka Foundation Best Overall Learner award. Since 2007, Shanduka Foundation has given this award to a learner from each adopted school who achieves an average of 70% and above, displays good behaviour and leadership skills and is involved in extramural activities.

Providing incentives and rewards to hard working learners has proven to be an impactful initiative and key ambition is to encourage all learners and community members to take ownership of their future.
