Message from the Executive Director: November 2015

Welcome to the last Adopt-a-School Foundation newsletter for 2015. It has been an eventful year for Adopt-a-School and we hope you have enjoyed sharing our journey with us.

As we start to wind down and complete our current projects, our thoughts and best wishes are with all of our learners writing their end of year examinations. In the 41 high schools we are actively working in, this year, we have 3078 matriculants writing their final exams. We look forward to sharing their successes and achievements with you in the New Year.

In the last quarter of 2015 a number of our colleagues crossed borders to share and explore best practices in the education and fundraising spheres. Donne Nicol, Executive Director of Shanduka Foundation and AAS Board Member and Phuti Mahanyele, CEO of Shanduka Group, attended the African Philanthropy Forum in Uganda, where they shared their views on education, activism and collaboration in South Africa.

Banyana Mohajane, Head of Social and Skills Department for Adopt-a-School Foundation and Chantelle Oosthuizen, Head of Communications and CRET for Shanduka Foundation were invited by the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) to visit their projects in Kenya and share insights in the education sector. They visited AKF’s various hubs in Mombasa and Nairobi focused primarily on education.

Keri Francis, the Foundation’s Communications and Fundraising Manager, attended the International Fundraising Conference in Amsterdam, Netherlands and returned with a wealth of knowledge and ideas for a creative and sustainable fundraising strategy.

In November we were, once again, honoured to be the beneficiary of the Rolfes Group Annual Golf Day and received a donation of R30 000. Thank you to the Rolfes Group and all the golfers who participated!

At our 9th Back to School Party in September, we collected over 600 books which were donated to two primary schools in the Bodibe Village, North West and Modilati Secondary School in Hammanskraal, Gauteng. 89 blazers worn by our guests were donated back to Adopt-a-School Foundation and distributed to learners at Eketsang Secondary School. These blazers were valued at over R70 000. This was all in addition to the R3.5 million raised for our work in disadvantaged schools. You can read more about our 9th Party in this newsletter.

We wish all of our supporters and partners, a happy and healthy holiday season. We look forward to engaging with you in 2016!

Regards,
Stephen Lebere
Executive Director
