Adopt-a-School Foundation hosted its 12th Back to School for Mandela Day on 18th July at Mveledzandivho Primary School in Chiawelo, Soweto. This initiative celebrated the life of the late Nelson Mandela and was centred on spreading humanity, active citizenship and volunteerism. This year, the initiative championed the creation of a conducive learning environment at Mveledzandivho Primary School and a donation of school shoes to learners in need. Additionally, the Foundation was delighted to also host two other Back to School for Mandela Day activations at Nageng Primary School in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg, funded by Siqalo Foods and Lot Phalatse Primary School in Hammanskraal through a literacy programme funded by Sasria.

At Mveledzandivho Primary School, the Foundation organised a series of impactful activities that aligned with its whole school development model. These activities included renovating the Grade R play area, library, computer laboratory, combination court and vegetable garden, funded by AngloGold Ashanti. The learners received a virtual reality experience that allowed them to delve into space; eyesight testing was conducted, and spectacles were donated. Further, learners received corndogs, snacks that included Shoprite Foundation goodies and Krispy Kreme doughnuts, Coco the Money Bunny books donated by MetSoP (PTY) LTD, a financial literacy talk by the author of the book – Nicollette Mashile, sanitary pads from Shoprite Foundation alongside SHE bins, a Health, Sanitation and Sexuality education talk by Adopt-a-School, stationery by Waltons, and a reading session by Miss South Africa.

The day was a success, with 110 volunteers from corporate partners and supporters joining us at the school. The Principal of Mveledzandivho Primary School, Mr Takalani Semenya expressed gratitude for the visit and all the help the school received.  The Foundation would like to thank its main sponsor, AngloGold Ashanti, and supporting sponsors Shoprite Foundation, Howard Pims Sports Club, Premier Optical, School-Days, SIP Project Managers, Krispy Kreme, Author- Nicolette Mashile the financial bunny, Waltons and participating stakeholders who purchased corporate packages such as the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation, KST, Black Umbrellas, MetSoP (PTY) LTD, Kapara Insurnaceand Lesaka Technologies (Pty) Ltd.
