A classroom should be more than four walls and a roof. It should be a place where learners feel safe, inspired and ready to learn, while protecting the natural environment they will inherit.
That vision has become a reality at Tjitjila Secondary School by the end of April 2026, as the Adopt-a-School Foundation completed four new climate-resilient classrooms, transforming the learning environment for both current and future generations. This project was funded by Sasria.
Designed with sustainability at their core, the new classrooms do more than provide additional teaching space. A rainwater harvesting system helps the school conserve one of its most precious resources by capturing and storing rainwater for future use. Solar-powered lighting improves safety around the school while reducing energy consumption and carefully selected indigenous trees and water-wise plants are creating cooler, greener outdoor spaces for learners and educators to enjoy.
These climate-smart features are helping the school become more resilient to the environmental challenges facing many communities across South Africa, while reducing long-term operating costs and creating a healthier learning environment.
The project reflects the Adopt-a-School Foundation’s commitment to building schools that are not only fit for today’s learners but prepared for tomorrow’s challenges. By combining quality infrastructure with sustainable design, the Foundation is creating learning spaces where education and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
As the trees grow, they will provide shade, improve biodiversity, absorb carbon and help cool the school grounds for years to come. Together with the rainwater harvesting system and solar lighting, they demonstrate how thoughtful infrastructure can support both learner success and environmental sustainability.
Tjitjila Secondary School is more than the site of four new classrooms. It is an example of how investing in education can also mean investing in the future of our planet creating learning environments where children can thrive today while helping to build a more sustainable tomorrow.
