The curriculum interventions at Boitekong and Meriti Secondary Schools, funded by Merafe Resources, are progressing well, focusing on enhancing educator capacity and improving learner outcomes in critical subjects. Both schools have successfully completed educator development programmes in Mathematics, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and ICT, addressing some of the most challenging topics for learners. Additionally, the second phase of the ICT Development programme is underway, continuing to integrate technology into teaching practices.
While significant progress has been achieved, Meriti Secondary School has faced notable challenges related to learner violence within the school and the surrounding community. In response, the Adopt-a-School Foundation’s Social Welfare team has been working closely with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to address these safety concerns. To protect educators and learners, some lessons have been delivered online, which has impacted the overall effectiveness of educator development and learner engagement.
Due to ongoing safety challenges, affected learners at Meriti will sit for their exams in January 2025 at a separate examination centre, with oversight provided by the MEC’s office.
Despite these obstacles, both schools have successfully completed team-building sessions with full participation from school staff. These sessions aimed to build trust, improve communication, and enhance leadership skills—critical components in fostering a positive and collaborative school environment. Early results show improved teamwork and morale among educators, empowering them to better support their learners and tackle challenges collectively.
The Merafe Resources-funded curriculum intervention has already made significant strides in improving educator skills and learner outcomes at Boitekong and Meriti Secondary Schools. While Meriti continues to address the issue of learner violence, the interventions have created a foundation for collaboration and resilience. With continued support and targeted efforts, these initiatives are expected to bring lasting, positive change to the academic and social development of learners at both schools.
