In many South African schools, limited resources are directed towards literacy, mathematics and other core subjects. While these remain essential, art is often not on that list. Yet for many children, creativity is far more than an extra-curricular activity. It is an opportunity to express themselves, build confidence and discover talents they never knew they had.
Recognising the importance of nurturing a learner’s creativity, the Adopt-a-School Foundation has invested in art projects for five schools. Through this Foundation-funded initiative, art clubs have been established at Bathabile Primary School, Qhobosheane Primary School, Tsakani Primary School, Diepsloot Primary School and Nageng Primary School, giving learners in grades 4 to 7 a safe and inspiring space to explore their creativity.
The project is about much more than learning to paint or draw. It is about helping children realise that they can create something meaningful. For a learner who may struggle academically, completing a painting or artwork can become a moment of pride and achievement. Displaying that artwork in the classroom or sharing it with family and friends builds confidence that often extends well beyond the Art Club itself.
One of the programme’s greatest strengths is its investment in young people. Each Art Club is led by a facilitator recruited from the local community, creating employment opportunities while providing learners with positive role models who understand their experiences and challenges. Before launching the clubs, the five facilitators completed an intensive training bootcamp in February 2026, equipping them with the skills and confidence to inspire the next generation of young artists.
Today, all five clubs are active, and enthusiasm continues to grow as more learners discover the joy of creative expression. Through painting, drawing and other artistic activities, children are developing problem-solving skills, perseverance, self-expression and confidence, qualities that support learning across every subject and prepare them for life beyond the classroom.
The initiative reflects the Adopt-a-School Foundation’s commitment to Whole School Development. While academic achievement remains a priority, the Foundation recognises that learners also need opportunities to develop socially, emotionally and creatively.
