The 2024 World Drug Day commemoration is anchored on two pivotal themes to foster an understanding of the issue. The first theme, “The evidence is clear: Invest in prevention,” highlights the urgent need to prioritise preventive measures to address drug abuse. The second theme, “Raise awareness: develop an understanding of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of prevention strategies in mitigating the harms of drug use,” underlines the importance of preventing drug abuse by using effective and affordable strategies.
On the 26th of June 2024, the Thari team and the Botshabelo Moral Regeneration Forum came together to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Botshabelo. The event’s location was strategically chosen to resonate with the target audience for the drug abuse and illicit trafficking awareness campaign, being held in a local tavern. It drew a large crowd, with 250 community members, both men and women and vital stakeholders participating in the event.
The awareness campaign was initiated and sponsored by the Free State Liquor Traders Association, demonstrating a firm commitment to addressing substance abuse and illicit drugs. The event saw the participation of key stakeholders, including the South African Brewers and the Free State Liquor Board, who have been actively promoting responsible alcohol behaviour among suppliers and consumers. The presence of the South African Police Services provided valuable insights into the crime statistics associated with alcohol and drug abuse, adding a crucial perspective to the campaign. Furthermore, the contributions of Thari and Setshabelo Family and Services probed into the many psychosocial impacts of alcohol and drug abuse.
