From 25 to 27 April 2025, a spark was lit in the hearts of 80 learners from Boitekong II and Meriti Secondary Schools in the North West Province. Over three transformative days, the Moral Regeneration Youth Leadership Camp, generously funded by Merafe Resources, became a space where young voices found strength, unity, and vision.
The camp was more than just a programme. It was a powerful journey of self-discovery, community building, and purpose-driven leadership. These learners arrived with curiosity and left with conviction, ready to lead their schools and communities with courage and compassion.
Day one focused on self-leadership, helping learners connect with their inner strengths. Through the Strengths Perspective, facilitators guided learners to reflect on who they are, what they value, and where they hope to go. The air was filled with hope as learners set meaningful goals and began understanding what leading with authenticity, honesty, and purpose means.
Practical leadership skills followed, with teamwork, goal setting, and problem-solving activities. These foundational tools are critical in nurturing positive school cultures and are at the heart of the broader Moral Regeneration Project.
As the sun set, learners gathered around a warm bonfire. Laughter, stories, and songs filled the night air. It was a sacred moment of connection, a reminder that leadership grows in community and shared humanity.
Day two opened most powerfully. As the soulful notes of Lean on Me filled the room, learners stood silently, eyes closed, hearts open. In that stillness, a deep sense of unity took root. It was a moment many would remember forever, a quiet but profound reminder that leadership means lifting others as we rise.
The day unfolded with key lessons in collaboration and school culture. Learners explored:
- Shared Leadership and the strength that comes from unity
- The School Culture Index to understand how school environments shape behaviours and mindsets
- Growth Mindset, a powerful lens through which to view setbacks as opportunities to grow
The camp hall buzzed with thoughtful questions, deep listening, and the formation of new friendships. Learners weren’t just participants. They were engaged, present, and committed to becoming the change they wished to see.
Special guests Ms Julia Sechele, Circuit Manager of the Boineelo Circuit, and Mrs Agnes Rasesemola, Circuit Manager of the Boitshoko Circuit, reminded learners that their presence at the camp was no coincidence. They were chosen because they carry the seeds of purpose and potential. Both guests encouraged learners to lead with intention and integrity.
The final day was filled with celebration and purpose. Learners worked in teams to draft School Action Plans, bold blueprints for change that reflected their hopes for their schools and communities.
Each group stood proudly to present:
- A mission and vision for their school
- Pledges to tackle issues such as bullying, vandalism, and substance abuse
- Creative plans to foster kindness, respect, and student-led leadership
The energy was electric as learners danced, sang, and embraced one another. Stories were shared, tears were shed, and new friendships were sealed with promises to support each other beyond the camp.
The true legacy of the Moral Regeneration Camp lies not only in the skills taught but also in the hearts ignited. These young leaders return home with a renewed sense of purpose and the belief that they can and will make a difference.
Their journey is beginning, but their impact will echo through classrooms, communities, and future generations.
