10 years of Whole School Development

In August, Adopt-a-School Foundation celebrated 10 years of Whole School Development at Olifantsvlei Primary School with the Shanduka Group and staff.  Deputy Minister of Education, Enver Surty attended the occasion which recognised the transformation of this former farm school into a fully resourced school catering for the Eikenhof communities in the South of Johannesburg.

Shanduka Group adopted the school in 2005 and their investment of nearly R40 million has already contributed to the lives of some 9700 school children and will continue to impact many more. Through its Whole School Development model, Adopt-a-School Foundation has built classrooms to address overcrowding, built ablutions and provided access to water, built facilities such as libraries and science laboratories and conducted a number of learner and teacher development programmes. The educators and school leadership have received leadership training and social welfare progammes, such as the provision of ID books and birth certificates , eyesight testing, parent support workshops and provision of uniforms and food parcels, have provided much needed support for orphans and vulnerable learners.

The impact of this adoption has extended beyond the needs of the learners. 127 temporary jobs were created for parents and 44 local businesses were supported.

“I’m honoured that the school leadership allowed our company to partner with them and have worked closely with us to create this excellent environment for our children,” Phuti Mahanyele, CEO
Shanduka Group
