Mobile optometry clinics to rural schools

In July, Adopt-a-School Foundation and Doctor Dire Thomas facilitated a visual support programme at Maiketso Primary School situated in the rural outskirts of Taung, Northwest. Maiketso Primary School is one of the nine primary schools adopted in 2014 by the Industrial Development Corporation. There is little access to social welfare and health care services in the rural village of Morokweng. An accurate diagnosis and a pair of spectacles can dramatically improve a child’s learning experience. Some 804 learners were screened and tested for visual defects and of those learners, 28 learners were provided with spectacles.

The handover of spectacles took place on 22 July 2015. One of the parents of a child who received spectacles, Lerato Mothibedi expressed her gratitude for the programme. “We are sometimes clouded by ignorance, some of us not educated enough to investigate the challenges that our children have at school. Thank you Adopt-a-School.”

“I am happy to be able to see the chalkboard. Oh! The world looks beautiful. My favourite colour is red. I am happy to take care of my new eyes.” – Ofentse Matukwi, Grade 5 learner.

This event follows a strategic planning workshop that took place last month. The SMT and educators were still fuelled with enthusiasm to implement the vision and outcomes from the action plan.
