Accelerated School Infrastructure Delivery Initiative Project Update

Adopt-a-School Foundation has been working with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Basic Education’s Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Development Initiative (ASIDI) to upgrade and rebuild three schools in the rural Amajuba District, that had previously been built from inadequate materials such as mud. This project, which aims to transform these three schools in to centres of excellence in teaching and learning, is nearing completion.  Advocacy and strategic planning workshops have been conducted in each of the schools and these strategic plans have been put in to action.

In addition to upgrading the infrastructure the transformation of these schools will also include social and academic developments.

Skills development programmes will include leadership and governance projects, Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioner training, librarian training and educator development in mathematics, science, Information Computer Technology (ICT), language, literacy and numeracy.

A support programme for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) will be established. All children will have their eyesight tested and spectacles, or further medical care, will be given to those learners with eyesight problems.

In addition to Adopt-a-School’s Whole School Development initiatives, the Department of Basic Education will be providing a Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) refresher course, a Facilitation Methodologies Refresher Programme and a Curriculum Management and Assessment Refresher Programme.
