National Teachers Awards

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) presented the 20th National Teaching Awards at the Soshanguve East Secondary School in Pretoria, Gauteng Province on 15 February 2020. The DBE paid tribute to teachers during a special awards ceremony, recognising outstanding teaching in the following categories:  Grade R Teaching, Primary School Teaching, Secondary School Teaching, Primary School Leaders, Secondary School Leadership, Special Needs Teaching, Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning, Teaching Natural Science Teaching (GET), Teaching Mathematics (GET), Lifetime Achievement Award the Prof  Kader Asmal  Award.

Our educator Gertrude Joalane Phirimana, Mathematics educator from Zamokuhle Junior Secondary School received an award at the 20th National Teaching Awards. Gertrude took third place in the award for Excellence in Mathematics in the GET phase. Zamokuhle Junior Secondary School is one of the 30 schools where the Foundation is implementing Whole School Development funded by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). Through Whole School Development, Gertrude is one of the educators that received educator development and classroom-based support programme in Mathematics and, Language and Literacy for two years in the 2016/207 and the 2018/2019 financial year. “I enjoy seeing learners display independent thinking skills, especially when they think out of the box when investigating mathematical rules and formulas” – Gertrude Joalane Phirimana.
