On 18 July, Adopt-a-School Foundation hosted its seventh Back to School for a Day on Mandela Day, in line with the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s call for sustainable action. The collective volunteerism day took place at Olifanstvlei Primary School in Eikenhof. Adopt-a-School Foundation sent out a call to action to its corporate partners to support the development of an Early Childhood Development Centre by pledging a donation towards the project. AngloGold Ashanti came on board as the main sponsor, followed by a number of long-time supporters including Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation, FeverTree Consulting, Premier Optical, McDonalds and Triviron.  The First Lady, Dr Tshepo Motsepe; the Top 16 Miss South Africa finalists and South African celebrities joined the Adopt-a-School Foundation, alongside its corporate and school partners, in support of collective and sustainable action for education.

The day began with a formal ceremony hosted by the key stakeholders and a tour of the school. Volunteer activities happened simultaneously and these activities included painting the Grade R classrooms, development of vegetable gardens that will provide fresh food to the learners through the school’s feeding scheme, revamping the sports combination court, fixing the jungle gym, fencing and enhancing the school’s library.  The learners, had a fun day full of activities and storytelling. Premier Optical conducted eyesight testing, which was followed by a donation of spectacles. McDonalds catered food for all the guests, learners and school staff on the day.

We thank all the staff that took part on the day ensuring the event was a success, your efforts have certainly made a great impact on the education landscape of South Africa.
