SHANDUKA GROUP SPONSORS EXCEPTIONAL YOUNG LEADERS TO ATTEND ONE YOUNG WORLD

2 October 2013: In support of nurturing young entrepreneurial talent in Africa, Shanduka is sponsoring 10 delegates to attend the One Young World Summit, an annual event, hosted in Johannesburg this year between 2-5 October 2013. One Young World is a philanthropic organisation that brings together over 1,300 delegates aged between 18 and 30, from over 190 countries to help them make lasting connections to create positive change.

According to Phuti Mahanyele, CEO of Shanduka Group, “One Young World speaks to Shanduka’ s values around developing young leaders who are able to make significant changes in their communities. The young delegates identified to attend the summit represent a group of talented, diverse and passionate people who have a track record in enabling change and leadership.”

The delegates represent the spectrum of the Shanduka team, including members from Shanduka Group, Shanduka Foundation, McDonald’s South Africa, Shanduka Coal and Coca-Cola Shanduka Beverages. Two students of the Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust have also been chosen as delegates.

Delegates will debate key issues such as education, global business, health, human rights, sustainable development, governance and transparency. The delegates will graduate as One Young World Ambassadors and join a global network of young leaders who create positive change in their communities.

In line with the themes of the summit, the Shanduka Group has extended its involvement in the summit to the opening ceremony and breakout sessions. With the support of the Shanduka Foundation, the Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust, Shanduka Black Umbrellas (SBU) and Adopt-a-School Foundation will play a pivotal role in One Young World 2013.

Shanduka Black Umbrellas (SBU) will host a breakout session for delegates at its Johannesburg business incubator, where delegates will see how SBU is enabling entrepreneurs and tackling the job crisis in South Africa.

Through Adopt-a-School Foundation, 1 500 learners from adopted high schools will get a chance to attend the opening ceremony at FNB Stadium. The Foundation will also host a breakout session at a Shanduka adopted school, Olifantsvlei Primary School. The session will allow Adopt-a-School to share with delegates its work in creating sustainable environments conducive to learning and teaching. Delegates will also tour the school to see how investment in education is changing the lives of not just the learners, but of the community as a whole.

Shanduka is immensely proud to sponsor these delegates and hopes they will take away the lessons, solutions and discussions that arise from One Young World and share them with those around them.
